Program Outline
The 10-week summer program is designed to provide an introduction to the world of real estate development. Our goal is to bring exposure to the myriad short and long-term impacts that real estate development has on our communities and neighborhoods. The case study format will provide students an opportunity to walk through the process of how an actual building in San Francisco is purchased, designed, constructed, financed, legally structured, and operated - all while having an open dialogue with local community members and neighbors and ensuring that the local city government approves.
Throughout the program, we will attempt to answer questions like: What does it mean to be a professional within the Real Estate industry? What are the career opportunities within this industry? What are the real-world applications and impacts of these career paths in my own neighborhood and community? We will invite thoughtful discussions and questions throughout the program with the hope that they will spark curiosity and excitement about future career paths. At the end of the program, we hope you will walk away with a deeper understanding of the amount of creativity, personalities and professions that come together to create the built environment.
Disciplines Covered
The current curriculum incorporates nine disciplines within the real estate development industry. The fields of Development, Architecture, Land Use, City Planning, Community Advocacy, Capital Markets, Construction, Sustainability and Brokerage are all represented by one of Presidio Bay’s actual project partners and consultants. Students will learn from project mentors about each field, everything from how they chose this career path to what their day-to-day looks like and engage in discussion about the potential career paths associated with their industry. Following this, each discipline is incorporated into a case study where project mentors will provide realistic feedback to each team about their envisioned project. The result is a thorough understanding of how each discipline is layered into the real estate development process to create the communities, neighborhoods and cities that surrounds us. Participants will have multiple opportunities to network with mentors and develop their own future career pathways.
Program & Scholarship Details
Scholarship Award
The program pays $3,000 per scholar for summer participation. If a scholar does not complete the program in full or is continuously absent, the amount will be prorated. Additional scholarships are awarded to each member of the winning capstone project. The program also covers daily lunches and reimburses transportation costs.
Work Flow
The program meets 3 days per week for 3.5 hours per day. Workshops will be held in-person in San Francisco. We will also take local field trips to project sites and partner offices. Students will be divided into teams of three to four for the Final Capstone Project. Each group will work together to create their own project vision including a brand, layouts, interior design inspiration, selling points, community serving features, and economics. At the end of the summer, each team will present their development to a panel of “investors”.
Eligibility
Students must be high school seniors or college students to participate in the program, and need to be able to attend workshops in-person in San Francisco Bay Area.
